Ibn Mandhour says in Lisan Al-Arab:
"Lank سبط hair is the kind of hair that most non-Arab Persians and Romans have while kinky جعد hair is the kind of hair that most Arabs have."
Here is an example of kinky جعد hair:
Kinky (Ja'ad جعد ) Hair
Qatat قطط means very kinky جعد and short hair. Qatat mufalfalan قطط مفلفلا means peppercorn hair. This person's hair is qatat mufalfalan قطط مفلفلا :
Qatat Mufalfalan
Qatat hair is kinky جعد , but it is very kinky جعد . Qatat mufalfalan قطط مفلفلا is also kinky جعد, but it is an extreme degree of kinky جعد .
If a person's hair is loose and hanging, it is called mursal مرسل . These boys' hair is mursal مرسل :Mursal HairMursal HairIf a person's hair is not mursal مرسل and is a lesser degree of kinky جعد , his hair is called rajil رجل . This person's hair is rajil رجل :
Rajil HairThe Prophet's (SAWS) hair was described as not qatat and not sibt (lank), but rajil.
Al-Azhari said that when the Arabs described a person's hair as kinky جعد , it was a compliment - unless his hair is described as qatat mufalfalan قطط مفلفلا. In that case, it is considered a defect. Again, this person's hair is qatat mufalfalan قطط مفلفلا:
